Gold Is Waiting for Something Big
Gold awaits US inflation data to break decisively higher or lower.
James LNE reviews his active positions across equities, forex, and commodities, highlighting key macro catalysts for the week ahead. He examines institutional positioning, central bank divergences, and the critical role of Wednesday's US CPI release in determining directional moves across major asset classes, particularly gold and the US dollar.
The Inflation Catalyst: Why Gold and the Dollar Are Waiting
Gold finds itself in a peculiar state of limbo. Despite a bearish technical setup with lower highs forming within an established downtrend, price action has stalled since late September. The culprit is straightforward: market participants are holding their breath ahead of Wednesday's US Consumer Price Index release. This inflation print represents the single most important catalyst for directional movement across gold, the US dollar, and broader risk sentiment this week.
The fundamental backdrop for gold remains decidedly bearish. US Treasury yields have climbed to levels not seen in years, with the 10-year yield now firmly above 5 percent and the 30-year approaching 5.6 percent. When bonds offer such compelling yields—roughly 5 percent or higher—capital naturally gravitates away from non-yielding assets like gold. This dynamic has created a structural headwind that gold has struggled to overcome throughout 2024.
Yet price has not yet broken decisively lower. The market is pricing in two competing scenarios. If the CPI print comes in hot, inflation concerns will likely persist, reinforcing expectations for the Federal Reserve to maintain its hawkish stance. This outcome would almost certainly push gold lower, potentially breaking through the 4,100 level toward 4,000. Conversely, if inflation prints cooler than expected, it could trigger a repricing of Fed rate expectations downward, potentially sparking a relief rally in gold as markets reassess the inflation risk premium currently embedded in yields and the dollar.
Central Bank Divergence Reshaping Currency Markets
Beyond gold, the week ahead presents compelling opportunities in forex driven by widening central bank policy gaps. The Bank of England sits at 3.75 percent with markets pricing 18 basis points of cuts by November, while the Bank of Canada holds at 2.25 percent with only 4 basis points priced for its October meeting. This divergence is fueling a bullish bias in pound/CAD, which carries an institutional score of 59.5 on the watchtower.
The euro, meanwhile, faces headwinds from 79 percent institutional bearish bias, driven primarily by fiscal concerns in France and broader eurozone bond market dynamics. A pullback into key Fibonacci support levels would present an attractive short entry for traders aligned with this consensus.
Pound/NZD offers a different opportunity: after languishing in a multi-month range since May, the pair is finally breaking higher with a re-established bullish trend. The H4 timeframe shows a clean Fibonacci setup with previous resistance acting as support, suggesting this trade could materialize within days rather than weeks.
Positioning for Volatility
The US dollar itself shows signs of topping, though this need not signal imminent collapse—pullbacks often precede further highs. With the dollar scoring 56 on the institutional asset scorecard (below the pound's 63), there is room for near-term weakness. However, any hot inflation print would likely reverse this dynamic immediately.
For traders, the message is clear: this week is about waiting for the inflation data, then executing with conviction. Gold is primed for a directional break in either direction. Currency pairs are aligned with institutional positioning. The catalyst arrives Wednesday morning, and markets will respond accordingly.
